Ruby Carlisle — I Don’t Mind the Rain | Sessions on the Green®

I Don’t Mind the Rain brings Ruby Carlisle’s smoky contralto into a restless Southern soul-funk groove, pairing earthy musical character with a wonderfully unvarnished view of everyday life.

A sudden downpour sends the washing flying, plans fall apart, coffee goes cold, and a supposedly repaired roof continues leaking. Ruby meets these small domestic disasters with humour, impatience and an increasingly relaxed understanding that not everything deserves an argument. Her conversational delivery moves between amused observation, dry retorts and moments of genuine reflection, finding personality in the pauses as much as in the words.

A hypnotic electric bass line drives the arrangement, supported by dry rim-clicks, sparse Wurlitzer, shifting Hammond accents and tremolo guitar. Muted trumpet interjections add character, while rhythmic dropouts and changing instrumental combinations keep the groove unsettled and alive. The chorus broadens into a funkier rhythmic feel without sacrificing the intimacy of Ruby’s lower-register performance.

Warm analogue textures and loose, syncopated interplay give the recording an organic, lived-in atmosphere. As the song unfolds towards its playful instrumental ending, its message becomes increasingly clear: sometimes the weather is simply weather, and a perfectly good day needn’t be perfect.
